Recommended route

Here are two recommended courses.

Geopark course

Recommended season April-November (please avoid snow period)

Akita Airport
Traveling by rental car. The nearest interchange is Ogachikomachi IC

Innai quarry site

15 min by car from Ogachikomachi IC.
The quarry site is a sight to behold.
You can see an impressive sight where the remains of the quarried stones are left as they were. Approximately 5.8 to 3.2 million years ago, extensive calderas were formed due to volcanic activity. The stones that solidified from volcanic ash and other materials during that time are what we call ‘Innai Stones.’

Innai Ginzan Museum

The historical museum of Innai Silver Mine, which once boasted as the largest silver mine in the Orient, offers the mine’s history. The building features a brick-style exterior inspired by the residence of a German mining engineer and also serves as the Innai Station building on the JR Ou Main Line.

Sanzugawa Gorge

A gorge located at the entrance to Kawaragejigoku. You can enjoy the changing scenery throughout the seasons, including spring green and autumn leaves.

Kawarage-jigoku

Kawaragejigoku is one of Japan’s three sacred sites, alongside Mount Osore in Aomori Prefecture and Mount Tate in Toyama Prefecture. Located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters, emitting volcanic gases and with the gray mountainside devoid of vegetation, it forms a desolate landscape that is reminiscent of hell.

Oyasu Onsenkyo

It’s a hot spring area blessed with geothermal heat and beauty of nature. You can enjoy both the spectacular geyser and the scenic charm of the gorge while indulging in the hot springs. One distinctive feature is the very high temperature of the source water that is 92 degrees Celsius. Consider staying overnight at one of the accommodations to unwind and relieve the fatigue of your trip.

Day 2
Inaniwa Udon
“Inaniwa udon is one of Japan’s three major udon noodles, made using the hand-stretched drying method. You can watch the udon-making process and also enjoy a delicious lunch.”
